Overview:

Undergraduate and graduate students across the world are invited to imagine and create ‘resilient communities’ by using living and green architecture to redesign a community center in central San Francisco, CA. The CitiesAlive Student Design Challenge, hosted on landscape architecture social media platform Land8.com, is an academic element of the CitiesAlive Green Roof and Wall Conference.

The Competition:

Design a new neighborhood recreation center for the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, located near Union Square and Market Street. Home to nearly 4,000 children, the neighborhood is ethnically very diverse, but it offers a highly urbanized landscape with limited open space or recreational sites - and few opportunities for residents to find healthy food choices or fresh produce.

A new facility would provide these children with expanded space for recreation, the ability to connect with nature through rooftop green space and gardening, and the chance to learn about sustainable use of energy and water. The center should be able to support these objectives onsite through educational programs, job training, and by the design features incorporated into the site itself.
