VariCAD 2014-1.0 Released

http://www.varicad.com/enLIBEREC, Czech Republic, Dec 15 - VariCAD announces the release of VariCAD 2014-1.0. The new features and enhancements included in this new version are following:

Support of multi-threading

Multi-threading (parallel processing of data) is implemented in preparation of 3D display (faster in file open or after rebuilding solids), in creation of 2D drawings from 3D, in volume, mass and moment of inertia calculations and in STEP files input. If enough of memory is detected, this features are used automatically. On the other side, you can turn them off optionally, or select number of used threads. For computers with multiple core processors and enough of memory, multi-threading increases speed significantly.

Faster 3D graphic

For OpenGL rendering, you can set 3 different methods. Until now, the slowest and less demanding was used as default. From now on, the fastest method is selected, if enough memory is detected. The fastest method increases time of 3D redrawing approx 3x. You can change OpenGL settings from command 'cfg'.

Faster 2D graphic

Redrawing of 2D is up to 3x faster, especially if you work with a lot of non-continuous lines. This improvement is more obvious under Windows. Also, this improvement is valuable especially for slow and old computers.

Changes in printing

For printing into virtual printers, like pdf, you can use true-type fonts. If a print batch is defined, you can change a printer for this batch. If it is supported by printer drivers or by system, you can redefine path of virtual print output. Also, as a new feature, you can print 3D images directly from 3D mode.

Improvements in mass, volume and moment of inertia calculations

Now, these calculations are changed. In most situations, volume is calculated numerically, but more accurately. Mass and volume calculations use multiple threads, so the time of calculation is shorter. You can define various mass densities for selected solids. If mass is calculated, the result can be assigned to solid attributes permanently. By other words, you can conveniently define mass for all objects at one step and work with them in BOM. Also, center of gravity is stored until the end of VariCAD session and can be used for location input.

Minor changes in geometrical constraints

You can define a constraint fixing object directly at selected axis.

Also there are further improvements in STEP input, minor changes in DWG/DXF input, inor changes in 3D kernel.

NVIDIA Announces CUDA 6 Parallel Computing Platform

www.nvidia.com
SANTA CLARA, CA, Nov 15 - NVIDIA announced NVIDIA CUDA 6, the latest version of pervasive parallel computing platform and programming model.

The CUDA 6 platform makes parallel programming easier than ever, enabling software developers to dramatically decrease the time and effort required to accelerate their scientific, engineering, enterprise and other applications with GPUs.

It offers new performance enhancements that enable developers to instantly accelerate applications up to 8X by simply replacing existing CPU-based libraries.

New features in CUDA 6 include:
  • Unified Memory - Simplifies programming by enabling applications to access CPU and GPU memory without the need to manually copy data from one to the other, and makes it easier to add support for GPU acceleration in a wide range of programming languages.
  • Drop-in Libraries - Automatically accelerates applications' BLAS and FFTW calculations by up to 8X by simply replacing the existing CPU libraries with the GPU-accelerated equivalents.
  • Multi-GPU Scaling - Re-designed BLAS and FFT GPU libraries automatically scale performance across up to eight GPUs in a single node, delivering over nine teraflops of double precision performance per node, and supporting larger workloads than ever before (up to 512GB). Multi-GPU scaling can also be used with the new BLAS drop-in library.
"By automatically handling data management, Unified Memory enables us to quickly prototype kernels running on the GPU and reduces code complexity, cutting development time by up to 50 percent," said Rob Hoekstra, manager of Scalable Algorithms Department at Sandia National Laboratories. "Having this capability will be very useful as we determine future programming model choices and port more sophisticated, larger codes to GPUs."

"Our technologies have helped major studios, game developers and animators create visually stunning 3D animations and effects," said Paul Doyle, CEO at Fabric Engine, Inc. "They have been urging us to add support for acceleration on NVIDIA GPUs, but memory management proved too difficult a challenge when dealing with the complex use cases in production. With Unified Memory, this is handled automatically, allowing the Fabric compiler to target NVIDIA GPUs and enabling our customers to run their applications up to 10X faster."

In addition to the new features, the CUDA 6 platform offers a full suite of programming tools, GPU-accelerated math libraries, documentation and programming guides.

MAXON Offers Free CINEBENCH R15 for Windows, Mac

MAXON Computer, leading developer of 3D software solutions for motion graphics, visual effects, 3D painting, animation and rendering, announces the immediate availability of CINEBENCH Release 15. CINEBENCH is a cross-platform testing suite that measures hardware performance and is the de facto standard benchmarking tool for leading companies and trade journals for conducting real-world hardware performance tests. With the new Release 15, systems with up to 256 threads can be tested. CINEBENCH is available for both Windows and OS X and is used by almost all hardware manufacturers and trade journals for comparing CPUs and graphics cards.

CINEBENCH is based on MAXON’s award-winning 3D software, CINEMA 4D, which is used in production studios worldwide for the creation of 3D effects in blockbusters such as Iron Man 3, Oblivion, Life of Pi or Prometheus. Contrary to artificial benchmarks that only perform abstract tests on specific functions, CINEBENCH measures system performance based on actual production processes in CINEMA 4D. The test consists of two modules, that evaluate CPU and graphics card performance separately.

Main processor performance (CPU)

CINEBENCH test procedures include a comprehensive test of the main processor’s performance by rendering a photo-realistic 3D scene. This scene, with approx. 280,000 polygons, uses various algorithms and all available cores. The test result is displayed in points.

Graphics card performance (OpenGL)

This test uses a car chase consisting of complex 3D scenes to ascertain the graphics card’s OpenGL render performance. This scene contains a large amount of geometry (approx. 1 million polygons), high-res textures and numerous effects. The result is displayed in frames per second.

System requirements:

The CPU benchmark requires a minimum of 1 GB RAM and supports processors with a minimum clock frequency of 1 GHz. The OpenGL benchmark supports graphics cards with 512 MB RAM and higher and OpenGL 2.1. CINEBENCH independently ascertains whether or not all required functions are supported by the graphics card to correctly display the scene. For additional technical information, visit CINEBENCH technical page.

CINEBENCH has been comprehensively developed further to take full advantage of the performance of state-of-the-art hardware. CPU and OpenGL test results for CINEBENCH R15 can therefore not be compared to the results of previous versions! The algorithm used to calculate render results was fundamentally re-written and now delivers results in a different and clearly recognizable value range.

Availability

CINEBENCH is available immediately as a free download at the MAXON website.
