Pointwise v18 Released for Surface Meshing in CFD

FORT WORTH, TX, USA, Sep 27, 2016 - Pointwise announces a major new release of its computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mesh generation software featuring unstructured quadrilateral surface meshing, unstructured hexahedral layer extrusion, and tetrahedral mesh clustering using sources.

Pointwise V18's new quad-dominant and hexahedral layer techniques were used to generate this hybrid mesh for the DrivAer automotive benchmark case. The off-body mesh is colored by cell volume. A clustering source has been placed behind the side mirror to resolve its wake flowfield.

“This latest release of Pointwise includes the broadest changes to the software's core meshing functionality since 2007 when we introduced our T-Rex technique for boundary layer resolving hybrid meshes,” said John Chawner, Pointwise's president. “The addition of quad-dominant surface meshing continues our work toward delivering tools that can generate higher quality meshes and do so faster than ever before.”

A new, unstructured, quad-dominant surface meshing technique complements Pointwise's industry-leading structured grid generation methods by providing a faster, more automated method for generating quadrilateral surface meshes. These surface meshes can then be used as the basis for Pointwise's T-Rex (anisotropic tetrahedral extrusion) technique for rapid generation of boundary layer resolving hexahedral layers.

Complementing the near-wall, boundary layer resolution provided by T-Rex, Pointwise V18 now includes geometry-based clustering sources for resolution of off-body flow features such as wakes and vortices.

Pointwise V18 also includes the ability to retain hybrid meshes in their mixed-cell format for mesh metric examination and other tasks, support for faceted geometry models with a mix of triangles and quadrilaterals, high resolution monitor support, and user interface improvements that span all aspects of the software's functionality.

ANSYS Introduces Elastic Licensing for Engineering Simulation

PITTSBURGH, PA, USA, Apr 2, 2016 - Companies around the world now have unprecedented flexibility to solve the toughest engineering and product challenges, thanks to the introduction of ANSYS Elastic Licensing. This new ANSYS (NASDAQ: ANSS) pay-per-use licensing model unlocks the world’s broadest portfolio of engineering simulation software – enabling users to optimize license utilization while giving them license flexibility to meet the changing demands of their businesses.

Offered alongside the traditional lease and paid-up models, as well as with cloud offerings, ANSYS Elastic Licensing is the first engineering simulation software licensing standard that provides hourly-based access to the breadth of ANSYS’ world-class multiphysics platform in a single license. Elastic licensing enables customers to size their paid-up or lease license pool to their typical workload, but make adjustments for occasional users to meet peak demands.

“ANSYS customers already benefit from the leading engineering simulation software in the industry. Our elastic licensing provides the flexibility for customers to use simulation in precisely the way that best fits their particular business,” said Ray Milhem, vice president of enterprise solutions and cloud for ANSYS. “Customers aren’t forced into any single option. Instead they have a wide array of choices across deployment and licensing options – enabling the broadest possible use of simulation. This is all part of our quest to make simulation available to every engineer.”

Elastic licenses have multiple use cases. They allow for ultimate flexibility across the full portfolio of simulation products. This option also allows for peak usage on top of more traditional licensing as well as for ad-hoc development teams focused on short-term projects.

The initial release of ANSYS Elastic Licensing will be made available through ANSYS cloud-hosting partner’s Bull Atos Technologies, CPU 24/7, Gompute, Nimbix and Penguin Computing, followed by the ANSYS Enterprise Cloud later this year hosted on Amazon Web Services. Through the cloud, customers will have unrestrained access to ANSYS’ multiphysics platform offering regardless of location, removing licensing constraints. ANSYS will also offer the option for its on premise lease and paid-up licenses.

"Flexibility is critical for a company like ours," says Sukhvinder Kang, chief technology officer for Aavid Thermalloy. "Working on numerous simulation projects with teams across the globe, it is difficult to predict up front, the mix of ANSYS products we will need, where we will need them and how many licenses we will need. Working with ANSYS has proven the value of usage-based licensing to support our constantly changing simulation needs. We expect that elastic licensing will give us the access to the broad suite of multiphysics solutions that we need to support our customers globally and bring our innovative products to market faster and more reliably than ever."

The most feature-rich release in the company's 45-year history, available now, delivers 10x improvements to product development productivity, insight and performance.

Simulation has been identified as one of the key pillars of the next industrial revolution, known as Industry 4.0. With the advent of the Internet of Things all products are getting smarter, new advanced materials are enabling lighter, stronger and more sustainable designs, and additive manufacturing enables users to 3-D print anything they can imagine. Unlocking the power of these trends is impossible without simulation tools' ability to virtually explore these vastly increased options to arrive at the winning designs of tomorrow.

"Companies are under relentless pressure to create top-line growth and increase savings," said Jim Cashman, president and CEO of ANSYS. "Innovation, time to market, operational efficiency and product quality are key factors that contribute to this business success. ANSYS is focused on helping customers improve their critical business metrics and leapfrog the competition by improving their product development process through engineering simulation. When we set out to develop the next release of our simulation platform, we challenged ourselves to improve our customers' product development process by a full order of magnitude, or 10x."

"Hyperloop Technology is accomplishing safe and reliable ground transportation at close to the speed of sound," said Josh Giegel, vice president of design and analysis, Hyperloop Technologies. "ANSYS 17.0 technology offers deeper insight into our designs and enables us to make the necessary improvement to our development process, which in turn will help us realize the Hyperloop concept."

"ANSYS has been an acknowledged leader in enabling simulation-driven design over the past several decades, and ANSYS 17.0 release is a major step forward in terms of bringing together all of the ANSYS modeling and simulation capabilities required to achieve the vision of an integrated yet open enterprise product innovation platform driven by behavior modeling and simulation," said Peter Bilello, president of CIMdata. "As industry moves ahead over the next decade to realize the vision and promised benefits of Model-Based Systems Engineering in the context of mega-trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Industry 4.0 and the Circular Economy, ANSYS' product portfolio and M&S platform is well positioned to meet the multi-domain requirements for developing complex cyber-physical systems with ever increasing levels of software and electronics content."

Highlights of the release include:

10x Improvements to Productivity - ANSYS 17.0 delivers solutions faster so engineers and designers can make more informed decisions sooner in the product development cycle. That enables organizations to rapidly innovate and bring products to market faster, while getting more productivity from their existing engineering assets.

Through tighter integration of semiconductor and electronics simulation solutions, ANSYS 17.0 delivers a comprehensive chip-package-system design workflow. New capabilities for automated thermal analysis and integrated structural analysis deliver an unequalled chip-aware and system-aware simulation solution, enabling customers to deliver smaller, higher-power density devices to market faster. With the advent of the Internet of Things, more products and engineers will rely on these capabilities.

In the fluids suite, ANSYS continues its technology leadership with breakthrough advancements in physics modeling and introduces new innovations across the entire workflow and user environment design to accelerate time to results by up to 85 percent without compromising accuracy. Improvements to workflow and meshing enable novice users to quickly become productive while new tools and options expand the application reach for experienced users.

"ANSYS has broken through by truly integrating multi-domain 3-D meshed solutions," said Brad Kramer, director of engineering at HUSCO International. "By closely integrating the fluid and the mechanical interfaces, we are now able to simulate and gain insight into the real physics of the problem without having to set up artificial boundary conditions."

Preprocessing – or the act of setting up simulations – with ANSYS 17.0 has also improved by an order of magnitude. Using the direct modeling tools in ANSYS 17.0, users can prepare their geometry for analysis faster than traditional computer-aided design (CAD). Save and load times for complex models, as well as the performance for common geometry editing functions has increased by up to 100 times. ANSYS 17.0 geometry tools also boast tighter integration to ANSYS Workbench and offer many productivity advancements for modeling fabricated and composite structures. Fluids pre-processing for complex systems has also improved dramatically. The process of preparing and meshing models with hundreds of parts has been reduced from days to hours with ANSYS 17.0.

ANSYS 17.0 enables software engineers to be more productive with developing, testing and certifying embedded software. New industry-specific vertical solutions take full benefit from the openness and flexibility of the platform to facilitate interactions with original equipment manufacturers and suppliers while adhering to such industry standards as ARINC 661/664, FACE and AUTOSAR.

10x Improvements for Deeper Insight - ANSYS 17.0 delivers deeper insight into real-world product performance through such enhancements as higher fidelity simulations and better post processing. For example, with printed circuit boards, engineers can now quickly import ECAD geometry and perform coupled thermal-structural analysis with power integrity and electronics cooling analyses to accurately predict stress, deformation and fatigue. These capabilities enable engineers to design board layouts and thermal management strategies for more reliable electronic components. As a result, complex board and packages can be set up and solved in minutes, not hours or days.

As products become more complex, the ability to simulate entire systems provides a significant advantage to manufacturers. Using a single simulation platform at ANSYS 17.0, engineers can not only simulate physical models but can also consider embedded systems design and embedded software models. This enables virtual systems simulation, testing and prototyping, reducing product development time and cost. In this release, ANSYS introduces native support for the industry-standard system modeling language, Modelica, which enables access to hundreds of additional mechanical and fluid component models in addition to its rich model library for power electronics. At the same time, advancements in the platform provide more insight to real world system performance by enabling high-fidelity 3-D results to be incorporated into system-level models.

ANSYS 17.0 greatly expands turbomachinery simulation capabilities across a broad spectrum to produce highly accurate results, across a wider array of operating conditions and with shorter turnaround time. Engineers can solve considerably more transient blade row configurations by calculating as few as one blade per row instead of the full wheel to speed time to solution by over 10x and drastically reducing the required computing resources. These advances are critical given that turbines produce 99 percent of the world's electricity.

10x Improvements to Performance - ANSYS 17.0 delivers performance improvements for all of its product lines, particularly in the realm of high-performance computing (HPC). ANSYS 17.0 introduces the most modern HPC solver architectures that leverages the latest processor technologies. Organizations can leverage this power on most IT configurations – from desktops to cloud environments – to obtain their simulation results sooner.

There is a clear global demand to develop more power efficient machines, but progress has been hindered due to the huge computational resources required to simulate an electric machine. Complete transient electromagnetic field analysis of an electric machine can require two weeks or more to complete. HPC advances in the ANSYS 17.0 electromagnetics suite deliver unprecedented computational speed for full transient electromagnetic field simulation for electric motor design. Simulations of critical transient behaviors that previously required weeks of computational time can now be completed in hours during early design stages, reducing the risk of project delays and late-stage design changes.

"This is amazing technology," said Briam Cavalca Bork, product engineer at WEG. "ANSYS 17.0 allows us to fully utilize our HPC hardware. Simulation time has improved by a factor of 20x, but more importantly we have gained more in-depth and timely design insight that will allow us to deliver industry leading, innovative machine designs. The new ANSYS technology delivers the capability to do more complex analyses on a greater variety of scenarios."

As previously announced, ANSYS fluids solutions have smashed the previous simulation world record by scaling to 129,000 compute cores running at 90 percent efficiency – a 10x improvement over the past two years. HPC performance of the structures suite has also improved significantly and now demonstrates scaling up to 1000 cores. Structural simulations which required running overnight, can now be completed in an hour, enabling engineers to explore 10x more variations and find the best design faster.

"Organizations across a wide variety of industries are struggling to keep pace with the growing need for data-intensive modeling and large-scale simulations to accelerate business innovation," said Scott Misage, vice president and general manager, High Performance Computing, Hewlett Packard Enterprise. "By bringing together all high-performance computing (HPC) advances made in the new ANSYS 17 release with our industry-leading HPE Apollo compute platform for HPC and big data workloads, our customers can now transform their product development processes, reduce engineering costs and accelerate time-to-market."

"Our partnership with ANSYS has always equipped us with exceptional simulation capabilities, which have allowed us to design and develop our cars more quickly, efficiently and intelligently," said Nathan Sykes, head of numerical tools and technologies, Red Bull Racing and Technology. "The ANSYS 17.0 fluids suite has been used extensively in the design of our 2016 challenger, the RB12, allowing us to conduct critical CFD analysis and make design decisions faster than ever before."

Pointwise, Sculptor, OpenFOAM Webinar on 15 Sep, 10AM CDT

www.pointwise.com
FORT WORTH, TX, USA, Aug 27, 2015 - Pointwise and Optimal Solutions will present a webinar entitled “Automotive Design Optimization using Pointwise, Sculptor, and OpenFOAM” on 15 September at 10 a.m. CDT (GMT - 5).

High quality meshing coupled with robust shape deformation techniques enable large design space exploration for optimization without the need to remesh the geometry. To demonstrate this, we introduce a collection of best practices for cleaning complex analytic CAD encountered in the automotive industry and demonstrate a robust meshing technology in Pointwise that can automatically generate high quality boundary layer resolved meshes that retain their quality when morphed by Optimal Solutions' Sculptor during the optimization process.

Hybrid volume mesh generated for the full DrivAer model using Pointwise's T-Rex with cells colored by  volume.

The case study for this work is the DrivAer model developed by the Institute of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at the Technische Universität München. Using this geometry, we demonstrate a technique called Solid Meshing to heal faults in the geometry and recover the original engineering intent and when coupled with T-Rex (anisotropic tetrahedral extrusion) enables automated, high quality volumetric grid generation.

Using the DrivAer mesh, we define a set of volumetric shape deformations using few design variables within Sculptor. A technology called Arbitrary Shape Deformation is used to smoothly morph the nodes of the mesh that are inside of the volumetric deformation space. Even for large deformations, this technology can maintain surface boundary layer thickness and orientation.

By eliminating the requirement to remesh after each volumetric deformation, solution changes are minimized and primarily subjected to the changes seen by the OpenFOAM flow results due to model differences. Also, all tools have been coupled to form an automated optimization framework making it possible to find the subtle shape changes that produce large improvements in design performance.

This webinar will demonstrate how to
  • Quickly clean up and organize dirty CAD using Solid Meshing.
  • Generate a high quality surface and volume mesh using T-Rex.
  • Save time by directly examining grid quality metrics within Pointwise.
  • Export grid and boundary conditions in native OpenFOAM format.
  • Easily define shape deformation control points using Sculptor.
Presenters will be Pointwise's Travis Carrigan and Mark Landon from Optimal Solutions.

Mark Landon is the Chief Technology Officer and founder of Optimal Solutions software. He is the architect of Sculptor, a program for morphing CAD, CFD, FEA, geometry and shape optimization. Dr. Landon holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Structural Mechanics from Brigham Young University (1989). He has also been an Adjunct Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Colorado, the University of Idaho, and Brigham Young University, a Senior Advisory Engineer at the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory (1993 to 2011). Previous employment includes working on the Space Shuttle Main Engines and performing aerodynamics shape optimization of supersonic and hypersonic vehicles for DOD & NASA.

CD-adapco Releases STAR-CCM+ v10.04

www.cd-adapco.com
NEW YORK, USA and LONDON, UK, Jun 25, 2015 - CD-adapco, the largest privately held CFD-focused provider of Computer Aided Engineering software, announced the release of STAR-CCM+ v10.04, the second release in 2015 of its flagship simulation tool. The latest release represents a major step forward in the company’s vision of allowing its customers to “discover better designs, faster” using Multidisciplinary Design eXploration (MDX).

The highlight of the v10.04 release is an entirely new Finite Element Based Solid Stress Solver, enabling Computational Solid Mechanics from within STAR-CCM+. This engineering breakthrough makes STAR-CCM+ the first tool on the market to offer both Computational Fluid Dynamics and Computational Solid Mechanics from a single and easy-to-use fully integrated environment. STAR-CCM+ offers the most efficient way of modeling Fluid Structure Interaction problems.

“The introduction of Computational Solid Mechanics in STAR-CCM+ is a very important step in terms of the future direction of engineering simulation,” said Jean-Claude Ercolanelli, Senior VP of Product Management, CD-adapco. “Engineers can now easily bridge the gap between the fluid and structure disciplines within one single user interface and environment. Previously, this was only possible using multiple tools and different skill sets across several teams. STAR-CCM+ users are now able to expand their applications scope and be effective immediately. The new Computational Solid Mechanics capability is using the same interface and does not require an additional license.”

STAR-CCM+ v10.04 continues the v10 theme of providing enhancements to make customers infinitely more competitive and effective in their marketplace through the pillars of technology, experience and productivity.

Technology: In addition to the introduction of Computational Solid Mechanics in STAR-CCM+, another major step forward in v10.04 is the implementation of the Adjoint Solver for Coupled Solid Energy, enabling sensitivity analysis of solid conduction problems. This solver can be used in conjunction with the adjoint flow solver for performing sensitivity analysis and optimization for problems involving conjugate heat transfer. This is a unique capability that will enable engineers to speed up their design process while including the effects of conjugate heat transfer. For further information, click here.

The introduction of reference geometry transfer through the STAR-CAD clients now allows the user to pass more data from their CAD package to STAR-CCM+, including transfer coordinate systems and reference planes and these are automatically synchronized during updates. This functionality enables easy boundary condition creation and post-processing based on CAD references while leveraging the strengths of STAR-CCM+. Click here.

Experience: STAR-CCM+ v10.04 delivers 22 new colormaps to further streamline the visualization workflow and help users gain a better understanding of their simulation results through high impact scientific visualization. Click here.

For improved monitoring and control during a design exploration cycle, v10.04 delivers a brand-new tab in the Optimate interface, giving users the ability to get live updates of simulation progress during the design process. This feature helps save engineering time by offering instant feedback on how the design is progressing and enables troubleshooting if required.

STAR-CCM+ v10.04 also adds enhancements to Custom Summary Reports, allowing the creation of well-formatted, customized summaries of specific objects within the simulation. This helps an engineer to quickly review simulation file content without opening the file and facilitates comparing results from different simulations.

Productivity: A unique productivity improvement in v10.04 is the introduction of Boundary Data Export for Simulation History. This capability reduces the size of the simulation history files and increases the overall performance by delivering the ability to save results for boundaries only.

Another new capability in v10.04 to significantly improve productivity is the Equilibrium DFBI Motion Type for sink and trim calculations in the Marine Industry. This feature is suitable for scenarios where a force and moment balance can ultimately exist in equilibrium and drastically reduces computational expense compared to a time-accurate unsteady free motion simulations. Click here.

STAR-CCM+ v10.04 possesses many new features drawn from suggestions submitted through IdeaStorm, the innovation forum exclusive to CD-adapco customers. The company is committed to three major releases each year to ensure it is delivering on its vision for the software and, at the same time, supporting the ongoing needs of its customers.
