Germany's Matzen & Timm Selects MSC's Marc Nonlinear FEA

http://www.mscsoftware.com
NEWPORT BEACH, CA, Jan 28, 2014 - MSC Software Corporation, a global leader in helping product manufacturers to advance their engineering methods with simulation software and services, announced that Matzen & Timm, a leading producer of specified hoses, bellows and other flexible connective parts made of high-quality rubber materials, has selected MSC Software's Marc nonlinear simulation solution for structural analysis.

The hoses from Matzen & Timm are used by industries where precision and capacity are important - like aircraft and automotive design. Diameter, construction, pressure loads, temperature resistance and compliance requirements are essential in their design and development. In order to meet increasingly complex performance requirements, engineers at Matzen & Timm will use Marc to perform virtual testing.

Simulation will give engineers insight into the different operating conditions, internal pressures, relative motions, and behaviors occurring during the installation of the hoses. The objective of the analysis is to assess strength, flexibility and nonlinear buckling forces. The realistic and structural-mechanical behaviors cannot be accurately predicted without the consideration of the nonlinear effects. Matzen & Timm use a combination of different materials with partly nonlinear properties. For example, soft and highly nonlinear elastomers were combined with stiff fiber reinforcements or metal components.

"The main characteristics of our hoses are lightweight construction in combination with temperature resistance," explained Matzen & Timm managing director Dirk Baumann. "They have to withstand enormous encumbrances like pressure and temperature - for example in an airplane. Marc's versatility in modeling nonlinear material behaviors and transient environmental conditions makes it ideal for Matzen & Timm, as the company develops products based on the latest materials and sophisticated production engineering."

About Matzen & Timm

Matzen & Timm produces highly specified hoses, bellows and other flexible connective parts made of high-quality rubber materials. These products are made for various applications in different industries. Wherever precision and durability is requested, the mostly handmade products of Matzen & Timm are used. The main characteristics of all products are lightweight construction in combination with high mechanical strength, flexibility, temperature resistance and the latest safety properties (flame, smoke, toxicity). Matzen & Timm is a member of the Masterflex Group. For more information, visit www.matzen-timm.de.

China's Zhao Shi Cheng Wins Delcam Int'l Student CAM Competition

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Jan 28, 2014 - Zhao Shi Cheng, from Beijing Automatic Engineering School in China, was the winner of Delcam's latest international student CAM competition, which was held at the company's Birmingham headquarters earlier this month. Second and third places were taken by students from Korea - Won Jun, Lee from Korea Polytechnics and Hyun Keun, Byun from Jeonbuk Human Resources Development Institute.

The competition was again sponsored by cutting-tool supplier, Seco, which provided the tooling for the student’s machining projects.

In addition to China and Korea, the finalists came from Greece, Taiwan, Russia and the Ukraine. Each of the contestants had previously won the CAM competition in their region to qualify for the final in Birmingham.

For the final competition, each student was given an IGES file of a component from which they had to produce a machining program using Delcam's PowerMILL software for high-speed and five-axis machining. The various NC programs were then run on one of the high-speed machining centers within Delcam's Advanced Manufacturing Facility using a specified range of tooling supplied by Seco. All of the students were able to produce toolpaths that could be machined successfully, with the results being assessed against criteria including quality of toolpaths, machining time and surface finish.

After announcing the winner and presenting certificates to all the contestants, Delcam's Commercial Director, Bart Simpson, said "Delcam works with universities around the world, helping to train the next generation of engineers for our growing customer base. We were very pleased by the standard reached by all the students, although that was perhaps to be expected after the finalists had already won competitions in their respective countries."

"We were very appreciative of Seco for the support given by the company for the competition," added Mr. Simpson. "We hope to continue to work with Seco on a bigger event next year, where we plan to attract finalists from an increased number of countries."

GRAPHISOFT Releases EcoDesigner STAR for ArchiCAD17

www.graphisoft.com.
BUDAPEST, Hungary, Jan 25, 2014 - GRAPHISOFT, the leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) architectural software developer, has announced the launch of EcoDesigner STAR, the first software that places standard-compliant energy analysis in the heart of the architect's familiar BIM work environment. EcoDesigner STAR enables architects to design the most energy-efficient buildings, by themselves or working together with engineers or specialist consultants.

Partnering with StruSoft three years ago, the single mission was to revolutionize how sustainable design is carried out in the Building Information Modeling environment. The result of their cooperation was the realization that while "energy" continues to be primarily a concern for engineers, the most important decisions influencing the energy performance of the completed building are made by the architect.

"The combination of the BIM model with hourly energy simulation based on weather conditions and operation profiles creates a virtual reality design environment that adds another dimension to the ArchiCAD Building Information Modeling experience," said Miklos Sved, EcoDesigner Product Manager, GRAPHISOFT.

EcoDesigner STAR enables architects to use ArchiCAD's building information model (BIM) right out of the box as a building energy model (BEM), resulting in the design of highly energy efficient buildings. Furthermore, EcoDesigner STAR offers standard-compliant energy analysis on the BEM and produces a detailed building energy performance report, all within the familiar ArchiCAD design environment.

EcoDesigner STAR for ArchiCAD 17 offers:
  • BIM Geometry and Thermal Property Data Export
  • Thermal Bridge Simulation
  • Expert Building Systems Settings
  • On-Site Renewables
  • Building Energy Simulation Using Standard-Compliant Analysis Engine
  • Energy Performance of Thermal Blocks
  • Building Energy Performance Rating
